Blackpool Promenade – it’s not all ‘kiss me quick’ and candy floss, you know?
Not all Blackpool shows are in theatres. Not all Blackpool shows charge for admission. Not all Blackpool shows involve sitting down. But then, The Great Promenade Show is no ordinary show…
Blackpool promenade may not strike you as the obvious place to mix art and fitness but a reconstruction of the sea defences along Blackpool’s South Promenade gave the town an opportunity to show off its artistic as well as its sporting side.
The Great Promenade Show stretches from Starr Gate to the Sandcastle Waterworld. It offers visitors two kilometres of split level promenade on which to walk, cycle, jog, skate or skateboard.
Walk the dog, walk the family or just walk – either way you’ll enjoy terrific views of the sea, and of the Pleasure Beach.
But at various points on your journey you’ll see something odd. Giant structures that require closer examination. Bizarre musical instruments. Monsters! You’ll even see Blackpool Promenade become a giant ballroom. Take in the sea air and so much more. Don’t miss The Great Promenade Show!
The Great Promenade Show – family highlights.
The exhibits that makes up this Blackpool show aren’t your regular art. Here are our favourites:
- The world’s largest mirror ball – 4.5 tonnes of spinning mirror ball which turns Blackpool Promenade into Blackpool Tower Ballroom!
- High tide organ – it looks like a great serpent’s tail, and it marks the northern end of the show (it’s next to the Sandcastle). But at high tide this artwork turns into a musical instrument…
- The tail of the whale – this majestic whale’s tail is also a seat and wind shelter. When the wind blows, the whole thing rotates…
- Monsters in Blackpool! – There’s an odd looking water tank opposite the Solaris Centre. It’s not much to look at, but there’s a strange noise coming from it. And what’s that inside...?
The show is at the opposite end of town from our Blackpool family hotel, but, as ever, no Blackpool attractions are more than a few minutes away by either tram or car.
The Great Promenade Show – the Poldhu Hotel insider’s guide:

- Walking this section of Blackpool promenade is a terrific way to see a part of Blackpool Illuminations.
- Trams heading to The Great Promenade Show are every ten minutes. Our local tram stop is just a two minute walk away from the Poldhu Hotel. Journey time will be around 15 minutes.
